Inclusion in Education: Gender and Sexual Diversity

Dimitris Karadimos is a Primary Substitute School Teacher with interests in inclusion and new technological innovations. Born and raised in the town of Serres, he started his journey in education at the Democritus University of Thrace, at the Department of Primary Education in Alexandroupolis. During his studies, he participated in a program of contemporary teaching approaches in theoretical sciences at the University of Castilla de La Mancha, Albacete, Spain. After completing his undergraduate studies, he continued at the Master level in the Master of Science Program: Cultural Diversity and Education at the Democritus University of Thrace, where he dealt with issues of diversity, inclusion and nationalism. His dissertation is about Modern and Traditional Homophobia in Greek Primary Schools. In the framework of this program, he participated for over three months in the education of refugee children from Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq and Africa at the Kavala Refugee Camp, teaching Greek and English as a Foreign Language. Afterwards, he continued his studies in the inter-university Master Studies Program of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the University of the Aegean in the Department of Journalism and Media Studies and the Department of Sociology of the University of the Aegean in a Master of Science Program on Media and Refugee/Migration Flows, from which he graduated with a scholarship. He has received training from the University of Athens and the University of the Aegean on modern approaches to teaching languages to foreign language learners and in Special Education and its modern approaches, always aiming at inclusion in the classrooms he teaches. Since 2019 he has been working in public schools for the Greek Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs in the Athens Metropolitan area.

His goal as Fulbright grantee and his research interests are to mitigate the discrimination and stereotypes towards LGBTQ+ students of the Primary Schools by creating an inclusive climate in the classes and Schools Communities he is part of. He participates in voluntary and activist activities promoting diversity, inclusion, tolerance, equality and elimination of racism.
