Overview and Guidelines
The Fulbright Foundation in Greece will award one grant to a creative practitioner for participation in the Santa Fe Art Institute’s international Thematic Residency Program. SFAI implements yearlong thematic programing that address pertinent questions facing diverse regional and global communities. Emphases:
- Open to creative professionals in all artistic fields including fine arts, creative writing, education, curatorship, art criticism, craft, design, architecture, theater, cinematography, photography, and digital arts;
- Well-defined, sustainable, innovative projects that will have an impact in the respective areas and that may lead to future collaborations between the United States and Greece;
- Dynamic artistic practices that engage complex social issues, inspire individual transformation, and inform collective action.
Key factors in candidate selection include artistic achievements, professional experience of the artist, quality of their past work, and potential to sustain productive residency at SFAI, civic engagement, extra-curricular activities, the applicant’s ability to creatively and critically engage with the theme of the residency season for which they are applying, and personal qualities/abilities to serve as a cultural ambassador for Greece. All awards are subject to the Fulbright Foundation policies, in compliance with the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FFSB) guidelines, and all U.S. government regulations regarding visas, immigration, travel, and residence.
Eligibility Requirements
Citizenship: Greek citizenship or possession of a Greek passport. Candidates with U.S./Greek dual citizenship are not eligible.
Residency: Priority given to candidates whose country of permanent residence is Greece, and to those who are committed to returning to Greece at the end of their project to fulfill the mission and aim of their Fulbright grant.
English Proficiency: Excellent command of the English language.
Research Period: three months (one semester) between January and March 2026.
Full-time Research: Engage in full-time research on the approved topic.
Preferences
Education: Preference given to candidates with a degree from a recognized university or institution.
Age: Preference given to candidates between the ages of 28 to 45 at the time of application with a minimum of five years’ professional experience in their field of work/study.
Recent U.S. Experience: Preference given to qualified candidates without substantial recent experience in the United States.
Location: Candidates in the United States at the time of application are not eligible

Terms and Conditions
Registration: before applying is mandatory so as to establish eligibility
Deferral: Awards cannot be deferred to the following academic year.
J-1 visa: Fulbright grant recipients must travel on a J-1 visa sponsored by the Fulbright Program. It is a condition of the visa that, after completing the research program, scholars must return to Greece and reside there for two years before being eligible to immigrate or apply for permanent residence or a work permit in the United States. The purpose of the two-year home residency requirement is to ensure that exchange visitors return to their home country and fulfill the exchange objectives of the Fulbright Program to broaden and strengthen mutual understanding between Greece and the United States.
Registration and Application Procedures
Step 1. Registration – Deadline: November 15, 2024 at 23:59 EET
Registration form: available online through the Fulbright website. Once submitted, the Fulbright Foundation/Greek Program Coordinator will review for eligibility. You will receive a confirmation email in the days following your submission including the access link to the application. The sooner the candidate registers, the sooner s/he will be able to start the application process.
Step 2. Online Application Procedure – Deadline: December 15, 2024 at 23:59 EET
Applications will not be considered without prior registration and acceptance to proceed. All applicants must complete the initial registration to determine eligibility before submitting a full application.

Selection
Selection Committee: interviews short-listed candidates on specific dates. Interviews last for about 15 minutes, are conducted in English, and are held online.
Fulbright Foundation's Board of Directors: endorses the candidates. Nominees are subject to final approval by the Foreign Scholarship Board (FSB).
