Dorothy Chansky

2023-2024 FULBRIGHT SCHOLAR INTERCOUNTRY LECTURING AWARD

Professor Emerita, School of Theatre and Dance, Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX

Professor Chansky is a specialist in American theatre history, theory, and criticism.  For her Fulbright in 2023-2024 she taught two sections of a course called "A Century of African American Women Playwrights" at the University of Lodz, Poland. In Thessaloniki, she talked about her most recent book, Losing It: Staging the Cultural Conundrum of Dementia and Decline in American Theatre (Palgrave).  The photo features the four student actresses who presented a reading of Alice Brown's short 1913 play Joint Owners in Spain, the first of eleven plays analyzed in the book, which offers a chronological, cultural, medical, and social analysis of plays and performance pieces featuring a character with dementia.  The best-known of these is Death of a Salesman.

For Professor Chansky, who had visited Thessaloniki eleven years ago, this was a glorious occasion to reunite with Professor Zoi Detsi, meet other scholars, enjoy the coast and sunshine, to eat wonderful food, and to begin to think about ways to get back to Greece yet again!
