FULBRIGHT STUDENT PROGRAM: OPEN STUDY/RESEARCH AWARDS

Virginia Commonwealth University, Engineering

When I’m asked about my Fulbright experience in Greece, there’s only one word that I can use to describe it.  Amazing. Becoming a Fulbrighter has allowed me to grow as a person by becoming more independent, more confident, more self-reliant, and more flexible.  While there are differences in the American and Greek cultures, I found myself relaxing into the Greek way of life where we work hard but play harder. This was evident on the islands during Easter, an indescribable experience.

Working at CERTH was a wonderful experience. Having a highly multidisciplinary project, I was able to interact with many people and do work that I would not be able to easily perform in the USA. I became the expert on toxicology as I worked with engine experts to directly expose lung cells to diesel exhaust. Being able to walk out of my office or lab at CERTH to see Mount Olympus was nearly as breath taking as watching the sun set over the White Tower from my balcony.  Put simply, my experience has given me a sense of philotimo.
